The challenge of netball number allocation

Netball traditionally uses numbers 1–7 tied to playing positions, but full squads often have more than 7 players. Distributing numbers across a 10–15 person squad while respecting positional conventions requires careful management.

Netball number conventions

#1 — Goal Shooter (GS)

The goal shooter traditionally takes #1, operating in the attacking goal circle.

#2 — Goal Attack (GA)

Goal attack wears #2, able to move across the centre and shooting thirds.

#3–5 — Mid-court

Wing Attack (#3), Centre (#4), and Wing Defence (#5) form the mid-court spine of the team.

#6 and #7 — Defenders

Goal Defence (#6) and Goal Keeper (#7) complete the seven positional numbers. Squad members who cover multiple positions typically take higher numbers.
