The challenge of american football number allocation

American football has positional number conventions set by both tradition and (at professional levels) league rules. Distributing numbers across a squad of 40+ players while respecting these conventions and individual preferences is a significant administrative task.

American Football number conventions

Quarterbacks — 1–19

Quarterbacks traditionally wear single or double-digit numbers. In the NFL, QBs are restricted to 1–19.

Running backs — 20–49

Running backs, halfbacks, and fullbacks typically wear numbers in the 20–49 range.

Wide receivers — 10–19, 80–89

Wide receivers traditionally wear numbers in the teens or 80s. Tight ends also fall in the 80–89 range.

Offensive and defensive linemen — 50–79

Linemen on both sides of the ball typically wear numbers in the 50–79 range, with defensive linemen sometimes extending into the 90s.
